10 Essential Rain Riding Tips

A good weather is always appreciated by riders, but not when it rains. Take it in your personal riding experience, have you ever thought of going out for a good ride when the drops of water is soaking the roads outside? I bet you don't. Well, lots of bikers refuse to go out and use their motorcycles when it rains. However, if we come to think of it, rain is not that bad if you know how to deal with it. For as long as it is not raining too hard and you wear proper clothing, you can still enjoy a fine ride and reach your destination fast and hassle-free.

There are plenty of things to consider when riding under the rain. The most important factor that you take into account is your wardrobe, for you cannot simply get along with the wet weather if you wear your casual motorcycle gears. Motorcycle jackets and pants may be enough for light drizzles, but surely cannot stand a heavier and consistent rain pour. The least situation that you wanted to experience in this times is to get a rain bath. With the water seeping through your clothes, you can be distracted and uncomfortable, worse if you will catch a fever or colds.

It is essential that you wear the right motorcycle rain gear for your comfort and protection in this not so riding convenient time. Below are few more tips that may be useful for your rain riding safety.
  1. Wear proper and appropriate rain gear. Find a gear that keeps good ventilation, but not allowing the water to seep nor does accumulate fog in the inside.
  2. Ensure that your tires are correct and in good condition when deciding to push through a ride in the rain. Never go riding with slick tires.
  3. Keep your eyes on the road. With rain water, the road tends to be more slippery. Avoid metal plates and manholes as much as you can.
  4. Watch for the rainbow colored water on the road. Chances are, the water can be oil, this is not healthy for your tires and your riding in general.
  5. Beware of potholes and puddles. Being filled with rainwater, you may never know how deep it is to the surface. It may jeopardize your riding big-time.
  6. Straighten you bike in railway crossings. Keep in mind that railway tracks are metal, and wet metal is slippery.
  7. Be careful in braking. Apply more rear brake than the usual. Brake gently as much as possible; however, if there is a need for you to brake urgently, pump them to prevent aquaplaning.
  8. Remain visible. Riding in rain or not, it is a rule in safety that you have to apply. The rain with its fog and sound can make your barely noticeable. Wear high visibility rain gear to make other drivers alerted of your presence.
  9. Reduce your speed and get more space from the vehicle in front of you. Braking distances are longer when it rains. In terms of speed, there are good advantages if you reduce it to 10-20%.
  10. Take a stop when there is lightning. Head for cover, but not under a tree.
Rainy or not, value your safety. Gears are created to make you safe and comfortable. Wear an appropriate one for your need. Enjoy your ride!
